The first settlers to the area arrived in 1835 from County Meath, Ireland. Later, an architect and builder from Scotland named William Aitken created a master plan covering 110 acres where he intended to build country estates for people who wanted a genteel style of living. Over the years more land was acquired and today the village encompasses 1,318 acres. Aitken's original intent - to create a residential community of homes on large tracts of land within a rural atmosphere comprising natural landscapes and open spaces - is preserved to this day.

Points of interest in Glencoe include the Chicago Botanic Garden, the Glencoe Golf Club, the Skokie Lagoons, the Glencoe Sailing Beach, Watts Ice Arena and Writers Theatre. The excellent transportation system includes Metra commuter trains with frequent service to the Chicago Loop - a quick 30-minute trip - and an extensive PACE bus system providing connections to other suburban destinations.
Glencoe is home to many architectural treasures including an entire subdivision of Frank Lloyd Wright homes - the third largest collection of Wright houses in the world. The village also boasts Revival, Tudor, Georgian, Victorian Gothic, Italianate and contemporary architecture by such notables as David Adler, Howard Van Doren Shaw, Charles S. Frost, William H. Furst, Robert Seyfarth and others. The Village of Glencoe has been home to poets, statesmen, skating champions, generals and captains of industry.
