| Acknowledgement of the AIA Guide to Chicago |
| Used as a source for some material. A great deal of the history and detail used here for 155 W. Burton Place was taken from the American Institute of Architects Guide, the highly-regarded guide to architecture in Chicago. While we had a great deal of background material, the breadth and richness of the AIA's descriptions and its quotable comments were very enlightening. We express our appreciation. |
| Traditional materials, reworked |
| Stone floors in foyer and kitchen area are a mosaic of found materials and period tiles by Grube and other fine
artisans. Tile, stone, glass brick and slate roofing tiles are used throughout the entire property sometimes
whimsically, sometimes exuberantly and sometimes with quiet grace. Broken slate roofing tiles appear in decorative brickwork, and Victorian tiles were re-configured into a maze of walk ways. |
| Detail: Ceilings, Walls, Windows, Floors |
| Intricately carved ceilings depict realms of the sciences. Walls have hand-painted frescoes by Miller, as well as plaster reliefs climbing the living room walls. Stained-glass windows are enlivened with Miller's beloved animals including antelopes, horses and (his favorite) weasels. Stairs are ornately carved. Custom lighting throughout includes Art Deco-like insets. Mosaic floor patterning with fired ceramic tiles. |
| Unsuspected treasures around every corner |
| The property reveals an unsuspected treasure around every corner, in every nook and cranny: wide-eyed gazelles,
arched-backed weasels, enchanting maidens, catholic saints, allegorical fantasy scratched into wet plaster, brightly colored frescoes, bands of color and translucent glass. |
