The Willson's were the owners from 1732 until 1860 and were known for "generations of confidence and conscience." James Willson obtained the first Deed on Willson's Chance in 1732 and by 1749 had cleared 35 acres of the Great Forest of the Choptank in order to reside and farm there. The Willsons did the initial construction on the site as well as a "progression of additions." His descendants are credited with playing many key roles in planting Quakerism and cultivating an anti-slavery movement which included helping Harriett Tubman to escape to freedom.
Colonel Richard Carter acquired the property in 1860. Carter, a Commissioned Colonel and State Senator, became an adviser to President Polk and consolidated the buildings into a single living space.
Captain Quentin R. Walsh became the third owner in 1963. Captain Walsh, a recipient of the Navy Cross in World War II, has the first U. S. Navy warship named for a Coast Guard Officer, the U.S.S. Walsh. A man of extraordinary courage and diverse accomplishments, Walsh captured enemy strongholds, saved ships and saved the whales by playing a key role in banning U.S. participation in open-sea whaling.
