Featuring wider streets and spacious yards, Edgewater is a sprawling area bounded by Lake Michigan, Foster, Ravenswood and Devon. The name Edgewater originated with developer J.L.Cochran, who wanted to create a small town in 1880. By 1910, the name Edgewater was being used through the area. Today, Edgewater is composed of many lovely neighborhoods, including Andersonville, Edgewater Glen, and Lakewood-Balmoral.
Andersonville is considered one of Chicago's "hot" neighborhoods and is renowned for its unique commercial district made up of mostly locally owned businesses. Edgewater Glen and Lakewood-Balmoral neighborhoods border Andersonville and offer quiet, traditional, residential settings. These family-oriented neighborhoods boast wide, tree-lined streets, vintage homes and close proximity to the eclectic shopping and dining in Andersonville.
Edgewater residents enjoy excellent access to public transportation. Downtown Chicago is a quick 10-minute drive via Lake Shore Drive, and Loyola University is nearby. The area is home to many distinct businesses and restaurants, a diverse mix of households and income levels, and a strong network of community-based organizations.
