Located approximately 17 miles north of downtown Chicago, the Village of Kenilworth is the newest of the eight North Shore communities fronting on Lake Michigan. The beauty of the village attracted many distinguished residents including architect and town planner George W. Maher.

Kenilworth's history dates back to 1889, when 223.6 acres of land for the village was purchased by Joseph Sears and developed as a planned community. Streets were platted to maximize the availability of sunlight in each home. Utilities were placed underground. There were large lots and paved streets, and construction standards were high.

Town planner George W. Maher, a contemporary and colleague of Frank Lloyd Wright, designed approximately 37 of the village's homes. His planning expertise and civic dedication further enriched the village with most of the parks, entry fountain, stone benches, planter urns, bridges and entry pylons that residents enjoy today.

Serving more than 3,500 students in grades K - 8, Wilmette Public School District 39 includes a significant portion of Wilmette and a small portion of adjacent Glenview. Children in grades K-4 attend one of four existing neighborhood elementary schools: Central School, Harper School, McKenzie School, or Romona School. Students in grades 5 and 6 attend Highcrest Middle School while grades 7 and 8 attend Wilmette Junior High. Student test scores consistently reflect achievement well above state and national norms.

The Avoca School District 37 serves students from parts of four surrounding communities: Glenview, Northfield, Wilmette, and Winnetka. The greatest number of our students live in Wilmette. There are two schools in the district: Avoca West, a K-5 elementary school; and Marie Murphy, a 6-8 middle school.

New Trier High School is one of the most highly acclaimed public high schools in the State of Illinois. The major campus is located in Winnetka and freshman students attend the Northfied campus.
