Often referred to as "one of the North Shore's best kept secrets", the Village of Bannockburn is located 27 miles north of downtown Chicago.
Residents enjoy the privacy afforded by estate-sized lots and carefully planned landscape buffers as well as convenient proximity to the neighboring communities of Deerfield, Lincolnshire, Lake Forest and Highland Park.
The first settlers to the area arrived in 1835 from County Meath, Ireland. Later, an architect and builder from Scotland named William Aitken created a master plan covering 110 acres where he intended to build country estates for people who wanted a genteel style of living. Over the years more land was acquired and today the village encompasses 1,318 acres. Aitken's original intent - to create a residential community of homes on large tracts of land within a rural atmosphere comprising natural landscapes and open spaces - is preserved to this day.
"The Village of Hawthorn Woods Recreation Department is continuing to grow and expand with each new season.
