Montreat, NC, a secluded mountain cove community nestled at the foot of Greybeard Mountain and surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains, is best known for Montreat College, Montreat Conference Center and their wonderful 4th of July Parade. At the town center, Lake Susan is surrounded by the beautiful, historic stone buildings. With a population of around 700, Montreat consists of approximately 4,000 acres of land, 2,460 of which are protected under a conservation easement.
Montreat is located in the far eastern portion of Buncombe County near the Eastern Continental Divide. From I-40, take Exit 64 to Black Mountain/Montreat (15 miles east of Asheville). At the exit, turn north on Route 9 and go through three traffic lights in Black Mountain. Route 9 will become Montreat Road, and you will drive approximately two miles to the stone gate at the Montreat entrance.
There is no commercial development in Montreat, not even a traffic light. Most of the streets are narrow and winding, with much less vehicle traffic than larger towns or cities. This is an advantage to our preferred method of travel - walking. Multiple trails wind through hundreds of acres of wilderness surrounding the Town, along creeks, across rustic bridges and through preserved woodland areas.
Robert Lake Park is owned and maintained by Montreat Conference Center, and we have to say, it's one of the best playgrounds around! The park is open publicly to individuals and families from dawn until dusk. Fishing in Lake Susan is available year-round with a permit in designated fishing areas marked by signage around the lake. Permits can be purchased at the front desk of Assembly Inn or in the Montreat Store, both located centrally to the lake. During the summer months, you can also enjoy paddle-boating and canoeing on Lake Susan. Barn dances happen every Friday night from 7:30 pm until 10:00 pm during the summer months, as we celebrate the tradition of "Friday Night at the Barn" with the music of the Stoney Creek Boys and calls by the Bannerman family. There's plenty of big circle mountain dancing and novelty dances, too. All are welcome and admission is free!
Montreat is committed to an enriching wilderness experience for all. Between peaceful picnic areas, an educational Nature Center, guided hikes and more, there's something in the outdoors for everyone. The Montreat Landcare Committee is a community based group of volunteers working on conservation projects to enrich the town of Montreat.
