Nestled deep in the Blue Ridge Mountains, 15 miles East of Asheville, NC, you will find a special town called Black Mountain where spectacular views have welcomed residents and visitors for over 125 years as they step from the quaint shops, prosperous businesses, and friendly neighborhoods into the great outdoors.
Black Mountain was originally known as Grey Eagle to the Cherokee and Catawba Native Americans who lived and hunted here in great numbers. Early settlers of the area were lured by the adventure and rugged beauty of the surrounding mountains.
The Town of Black Mountain was founded in 1893. It was named for the Black Mountain range of mountains that border the Town to the north. At the time of incorporation, the Town of Black Mountain had become a major pathway for westbound immigrants, commercial trade, and the mountain railroad. This strategic location helped establish Black Mountain as one of the most prosperous and picturesque communities in the country.
Black Mountain is located in eastern Buncombe County. The town of Montreat borders Black Mountain to the north, and the unincorporated community of Swannanoa is on the west border. U.S. Route 70 (State Street) is the main road through the center of town. Interstate 40 passes just to the south of downtown, with access from exits 64 and 65. Via I-40 it is 15 miles west to Asheville and 41 miles east to Morganton.
The Swannanoa River flows from east to west through the town, rising just 3 miles (5 km) to the east at Swannanoa Gap on the crest of the Appalachians.
Black Mountain is nationally recognized for arts, crafts, furniture, and music. It is currently home to over 200 businesses, including restaurants, bed and breakfasts, specialty shops, and breweries. The surrounding mountains offer walking, hiking, biking trails, greenways, camping, trout fishing, lakes, and nearby waterfalls. The Swannanoa Valley is home to six major conference centers, two colleges, and several well-known summer camps.
Town Square is full of beautiful landscaping and oversized rocking chairs, as well as numerous gift shops, galleries, antique stores, ice cream parlors, and craft stores. There is also an authentic old fashioned general store – Town Hardware, Art Center, Valley Museum, and restored train depot selling arts & crafts.
