Settlers first arrived in Northfield in the 1850s to farm hay and grain, packing straw from the Skokie Swamps, mushrooms and horseradish. Families with school age children will enjoy some of the best schools in north suburban Chicago, while senior citizens will enjoy the largest and best-attended senior center in the area offering a wealth of programs and services.
Residents enjoy extensive bicycle and jogging trails as well as the boating, wooded hiking trails and bridle paths through the Skokie Lagoons Forest Preserve. Northfield is one of the few North Shore communities that issues licenses for keeping horses.
The Northfield Parks are located throughout the community within the neighborhoods, creating an intimate and friendly neighborhood gathering place.
