Formerly an overnight stop for travelers from Chicago headed to the Wisconsin Territory, the Village of Wheeling has emerged as a well-rounded community in Chicago's booming northwest suburbs. The string of inns, taverns and eateries established in the 1830's was the start of what is now Wheeling's renowned Restaurant Row.
Today, the village offers a wide range of housing styles and options from single family home is older tree-lined neighborhoods to well-maintained condominium developments. The number of businesses in the village has also more than doubled since 1981.
Commuters benefit from easy access to Interstate 294, as well as from Metra rail service on the North Central Line via the Wheeling Metra Station. Wheeling residents enjoy convenient access to grocery stores and shopping centers, health care facilities, places of worship, and award-winning public schools.
A diverse group of people with ancestries from all over the world, Wheeling residents enjoy close proximity to several regional shopping malls and a dozen different shopping centers within the village. The park district maintains 270 acres of community parks, playgrounds and facilities including the year-round indoor Arctic Splash and the outdoor Aquatic Center, the historic Chevy Chase Country Club, and the state-of-the-art fitness center.
Community Consolidated School District 21 and Prospect Heights School District 23 serve the Village of Wheeling for primary and middle school education. Wheeling's secondary education students attend Township High School District 214's Wheeling and Buffalo Grove High Schools. Both schools offer a full range of courses, with emphasis on college preparatory curriculum.
