The Village of Northfield features a wide range of living styles - from quaint century-old properties, to modern condominiums, to the most upscale mansions. It is one of the few North Shore communities which issues licenses for keeping horses and features extensive bicycle and jogging trails. Bordered by the communities of Northbrook, Glenview, Winnetka and Wilmette, the Village of Northfield has easy access to two of Chicago's biggest highway systems: 1-94 and I-294. O’Hare Airport is 25-minute drive. Commuters are minutes from the Winnetka and Glenview Metra stations.

Residents are served by two area park districts - the Northfield Park District and the Winnetka Park District - and enjoy lighted tennis courts, baseball diamonds and soccer fields, ice skating, batting cages, volleyball courts, numerous wooded areas including the Skokie Lagoons Forest Preserve with hiking trails, boating, and bridle paths. The Northfield Community Center features a full sized gym, fitness center, and residents center.

There are many outstanding shops in Northfield that offer: antiques, specialty gifts, home accessories, jewelry, women’s clothing, women’s accessories, children’s clothing, children’s items, shoes and sporting goods. Northfield’s schools are often called the "crown jewel" of the community. High school students attend New Trier High School. Several private elementary and secondary schools also serve the Northfield area.
